Porches Commonly Asked Questions

How big can you build a porch without planning permission?

In most areas, planning permission is not required for a porch if it meets the following criteria:

• The ground area is no larger than 3 square metres.

• The height does not exceed 3 metres above ground level.

• It is at least 2 metres away from any boundary or highway.

For porches that fall outside these limits, a full planning application will be required. Additionally, if your property is a listed building, you will likely need Listed Building Consent for any construction work.

Does a porch need foundations?

This will be highly dependent on the design chosen but in general a Porch consists of low level dwarf walls which if incorporated into your design will require foundations.

Should a porch be the same colour as your house?

There is no rule of thumb when it comes to the colour or design of your porch. That said, we would advise that you are mindful of kerb appeal and the surrounding properties so that you can ensure that any finished porch enhances the value of your home.
